Major selection in B.Sc Hons agriculture science
The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, usually
abbreviated as either B.Sc.(Agr.) or B.S.A.
or B.Sc.(Ag.) or B.Sc. (Hons.) Agri. science is the first
undergraduate degree awarded by university faculty of agriculture and agricultural colleges. The
program is 4 years of study above Grade 12 High School graduation.
Faculty
of Agriculture in UAF is the biggest faculty in the University both by
infrastructure and the strength of
students. It consists of two Institutes i.e. Institute of Soil &
Environmental Sciences and Institute of Horticultural Sciences; five
Departments, i.e., Department of Agronomy; Department of Plant Breeding &
Genetics; Department of Entomology; Department of Plant Pathology; and
Department of Forestry & Range Management, and one Centre of Agricultural,
Biochemistry & Biotechnology (CABB).
Academically,
it offers B.Sc.(Hons.) Agri. Sciences (four years degree) in which the students
have to study common courses during first 4 semesters. Afterwards the students
opt for major choice before the beginning of their 5th semester. Available
agriculture major subjects include: Agronomy, Plant Breeding & Genetics,
Entomology, Plant Pathology, Forestry & Range Management, Soil Science,
Horticultural Sciences, Agricultural Extension, Biotechnology, Seed Science
& Technology, Marketing & Agribusiness. Other allied degrees of
B.Sc.(Hons.) are also awarded in the subjects of Agricultural & Resource
Economics, Food Science & Technology, Animal Sciences, Microbiology,
Environmental Sciences..
According to me, I have divided major subjects into 3 main categories.
- Pure Agriculture Majors
- Mixture Of Agriculture Majors
- Non Agriculture Majors
Pure
Agriculture Majors:
In this category , Agronomy, Plant
Breeding & Genetics, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Soil Science, Horticultural Sciences,
Agricultural Extension, , Seed Science & Technology are included.
Mixture of agriculture majors;
In this category, Agri biotechnology and agri
business are included.
Non agriculture majors:
Environmental
science, animal husbandry, microbiology and food science and technology are included.
Important
issues for major selection:
Selection
of major depends on students. What is he needed? A job, CGPA improvement, lab
work, want to do M.phil and PhD and most important is that the student is
male or female ?.
1 1- Suitable Major For Female Students:
According
to me, I shall suggest that female should select FST, Biotech and microbiology
, because there is mostly lab work in
these majors and it is according to their taste.
2 2- Agronomy May Be Best Option For Female
Students But Not Males:
It is best option because of less saturation
of females in this major. It will be tough but there are big opportunities to
get a job of lecturer in any university on female quota. As well as it concern with male students there
is huge saturation in this major. 45 out of 750 unemployed PhD scholars are
from agronomy.
3 - If You Want Job after Degree:-
If you are not interested in higher degrees, then you
should select the category of “pure agriculture
major”. Best option for south Punjab
and Sindh students is entomology. You
would get job in agro chemicals companies. Other pure agriculture majors are
less important as compared to entomology.
4-If
you want to improve CGPA :
There are two possible conditions for cgpa.
I.
First
condition is that your cgpa is 2.5 to 2.8.
II.
2nd
condition is that you have 3.00 cgpa.
A-Selection According To
First Condition:
There
are some majors which have merit 2.8-3.3 like FST, agronomy, PBG, HORTI, PP and
some time biotech are comes in high merit . So you cannot give preference to
these majors. Now you can select Agriculture
Extension and forestry to improve your CGPA. You should never chose AH and microbiology.
B-Selection According To
2nd Condition:-
If
you have CGPA is under 3.00 then you can chose PP, HORTI and entomology. These
major can help you to improve your cgpa.
5- Importance of “Mixture
of Agriculture Majors”:-
As
above I have mentioned Agriculture business and Agriculture biotechnology as
mixture of agriculture majors.
“In
all 16 major of agriculture, Agriculture business has highest number of
opportunities and scope “(said by Dr. Professor Rana Iqrar ahmad ex vc UAF in
2014 in a seminar).
As
well as it concern with agriculture biotechnology. It is new pure science emerging
major. It has highest merit in Pakistan. If you want to get admission in biotechnology
after F.Sc, then you should get 80-90% marks in F.Sc. but here it is opportunity
for you get benefit of duel degree like agriculture and biotechnology.
6- Importance of Non
Agriculture Majors:-
If
you select environmental science, food science and technology, animal husbandry
and microbiology, then you will be awarded with B.Sc (Hons) ES, FST,AH and microbiology
and I think it is has merits as well as demerits. In AH and FST , you can easily
get job. Merits are like that someone
has not interested in Agriculture then he will be awarded with these degrees. When
you select these major then you have wasted 2 year of your education because
mostly you had studied about agriculture.
